Windblown/Uprooted Oak Tree in Launceston, Cornwall

Project Snapshot

Our expert tree surgeons recently completed a Commercial Tree Surgery project for a Windblown/Uprooted Oak Tree in Launceston, Cornwall. The task was to ensure the safety of the uprooted tree that was obstructing the gateway between two fields. We also removed the hung-up branches in the neighbouring tree. The uprooted tree was left in rounds for firewood.

The Challenge

We were contacted by an elderly landowner who needed help dealing with a large, uprooted oak tree in Launceston that had been windblown during a storm a few weeks prior. The tree had blocked and damaged a gate that connected two fields where the landowner wanted her sheep to graze.

While removing the upper canopy and larger limbs, we came across a hornet nest under the main stem, which made the situation even more precarious.

Since the stem was large and heavy, we used machinery to move the wood from the bank and ditch into the field. We left the wood in rounds for the client to process for firewood.

The Solution

Our team of three qualified tree surgeons brought climbing kits, large saws, and a Sherpa Agri Loader to remove the uprooted oak tree in Launceston. First, we removed any branches and debris from the ground, leaving the wood in rounds in the field and piling up the brash on the bank as a habitat for wildlife. Then, we cut up the large stem, separated it from the root plate, and moved some larger pieces out of the way with the loader.

On day two, we assessed which limbs we could fell, and which ones were hung up and needed to be pulled out or cut from above up the neighbouring tree. We noticed hornets flying around but didn’t think much of it as they didn’t seem interested in us yet.

After safely felling the larger limbs, we cut them into manageable lengths, and pulled them from the bank and ditch onto the field using the loader. It was then that we discovered a hornet nest beneath the tree. We immediately stopped working and informed the client that we couldn’t continue until the nest was dealt with. While pest control removed the nest, we worked on other jobs for a few days and then returned to clear up the rest of the trunk.

The Results

After three days of work, split up by a weekend and hornet nest removal, the uprooted oak tree was completely cut up and removed from the neighbouring tree, bank, ditch, and gate onto the field. The customer can now use the field again for their sheep without worrying about any risky hanging branches overhead. Overall, they were very pleased with the outcome and now have a lot of firewood to keep them warm for a few winters ahead!
